You Must Make a Choice

“…Choose for yourselves this day whom you will serve, whether the gods your ancestors served beyond the Euphrates, or the gods of the Amorites, in whose land you are living. But as for me and my household, we will serve the LORD.”

– Joshua 24:15

Every great event, every great movement, every great accomplishment begins with a decision. In 1955 a young black woman named Rosa Parks sparked a whole civil rights movement because she made a decision not to give up her seat on a bus. In 1914 Archduke Francis Ferdinand and his wife were assassinated because a young militia group decided they were going to kill him. This decision was a major factor that led to World War 1.

Every day of our lives we are faced with decisions and some decisions will literally change your life forever. Joshua presents us with one today…choose who you will serve.

Breaking news: You are going to serve someone or something. Could be family, career, friends, ministry, money, sex, fame, Facebook, Twitter, Instagram or yes even God. You have to decide but you will serve. This decision is so important that the quality, effectiveness and outcome of your life will all be determined by who you decide to serve.

Bob Dylan put this thought into song with these words:

You’re gonna have to serve somebody
Well, it may be the devil
or it may be the Lord

But you’re gonna have to serve somebody

So, I ask you, who will you decide to serve today? If you decide to follow Christ and serve God, then you make a decision for discipleship. This decision will cost you something, but the rewards are eternal and worth it all.

God, I choose to focus on discipleship and following you. Help me to lean into You and live out my faith and truly become an effective follower of Jesus Christ. My life and the lives of everyone around me depend on it. In Jesus’ name, Amen.
