There is a team building exercise that companies and people do where one person would stand up and another person would be behind them. The person in front would then have to fall backwards and trust that the person behind them would catch them. Even though the results were often positive as people usually didn’t let the other person fall, this exercise was a lot harder than you would think. You see in the 2 positions only one person had to exercise trust and that was the person falling.

Imagine letting yourself go and believing that the person behind you who you can’t see is going to catch you. Does this sound familiar? This is the exact same way we must trust God.

I will admit this is one of the biggest fights I have experienced and it will be one of the biggest ones you will experience. It’s easy to “trust” when you know how things are going to work out and when life is good. You have the job, so you know how you will pay your bills. The kids and everyone are healthy. Family is doing well and everything is great. It’s easy then to trust.

But what happens when things seem to fall apart. When you lose the job. When you get sick. When your child wants to stop serving the Lord. When you can’t see where you are going and all you can do is close your eyes and fall backwards and hope your Father will catch you. That is real trust and here is good news. God will always catch you.

In Matthew 6 Jesus encourages us not to worry but to trust. He says what man by worrying can add a single hour to his life? When your life is full of worry then there is one thing you can’t do that is trust. However, this is a battle you will fight because when life hits sometimes it hits hard and when you get hit hard sometimes it hurts and you lose your ability and desire to trust. It is in these moments that the truth of God’s word is the thing you must fall back on.

It is his promises made in scripture that you can cling to and hold on to regardless of what the situation looks like. It may seem hopeless. It may feel hopeless. But it’s not. As the psalmist said in Psalm 25, No one who trusts in you will ever be put to shame… Be encouraged as you wait for the God who will not fail you.
